EVALUATION OF CLINICAL, ETIOLOGICAL AND EEG PROFILE OF NEONATAL SEIZURE

Background: Neonatal seizure is a paroxysmal behavior caused by hyper-synchronous discharge of group neurons. seizures are the most common overt manifestation neurological dysfunction in newborn. The electroencephalography (EEG) an important tool evaluation infant with symptoms referable to central nervous system. It provides excellent and non-invasive method assessing at risk newborns formulating prognosis for long-term outcome. Hence, this study was planned evaluate clinical, etiological, EEG profile neonatal its corelation developmental Methods: Prospective observational done among 71 cases patients admitted Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College hospital from November 2014 October 2015. All consecutive term preterm neonates documented who were intensive care unit (NICU) proper consent counseling parents included study. Results: Total enrolled, out them 21% (n=15) within 24 h birth, 42% (n=30) 24–72 h, 37% (n=26) newborn >72 birth. number male 56% (n=40), while female 44% (n=31). Out newborn, 60 (84%) had subtle seizure, 4 (6%) tonic seizures, 2 (3%) clonic 5 (7%) seizure. In our study, causes birth asphyxia 50% (n=36), meningitis 15% (n=11), hypoglycemia 13% (n=9). Other cause hypocalcemia 8.5% (n=6), kernicterus 2.8% (n=2), intraventricular hemorrhage 1.5% (n=1). Conclusion: we have found that babies appear adverse neurodevelopmental outcome due any brain insult occurred during period.
